How do I troubleshoot contact imports in Whippy?
Last updated: November 5, 2026
Use this troubleshooting checklist when a contact import fails, imports incomplete data, or creates contacts that need cleanup.
Before you start
Open the source file or pasted data before importing.
Confirm each column has a clear header.
Use a small test file before importing a large audience.
Steps
Open the source file before importing.
Confirm the first row contains clear column headers.
Check that phone numbers, emails, and external IDs use consistent formats.
Remove blank rows, merged cells, duplicate header rows, and unrelated notes.
Save the file as CSV or XLSX when possible.
Start the import from Contacts > All contacts > Add > Import CSV.
Map columns carefully in the importer.
Review the imported static list.
Spot-check several imported contact records.
Tips
Use one column for each contact field.
Keep country codes and phone formatting consistent.
Use external ID when contacts come from another system.
Clean the source file before uploading it.
Troubleshooting
If the importer cannot read the file, remove unsupported formatting, merged cells, or hidden header rows, then save as CSV or XLSX.
If contacts import without phone or email values, repeat the import with clearer headers and check column mapping.
If imported contacts are not opted in, review consent requirements and select the correct opt-in channels during import.
If duplicates are created, check whether phone, email, or external ID values were missing or inconsistent.
