How do I set up object associations for contact filtering?
Last updated: November 5, 2026
Set up object associations so contacts can be filtered using related object data in Whippy.
Before you start
Confirm the custom object or related data type exists.
Decide which relationship should connect contacts to that object.
Confirm you have permission to manage custom data or object settings.
Steps
Open the relevant data or object settings area.
Find the object that should be associated with contacts.
Review the object's relationship or association settings.
Create or confirm the association between the object and contacts.
Save the object configuration.
Open Contacts.
Use the filter builder to choose the associated object or related object field.
Apply the filter and confirm the expected contacts appear.
Tips
Name object fields clearly so teammates can identify them in filters.
Test with a small set of contacts before relying on the association for campaigns or sequences.
Use object associations when filtering needs related records, not just fields stored directly on the contact.
Document which object fields should be used for common audiences.
Troubleshooting
If an object is not available in the filter builder, confirm the association exists and the user has access.
If results look incomplete, check whether contacts are actually linked to the related object records.
If a field is missing, review the object configuration and synced data.
If filters return too many records, add more specific object field conditions.
