How do I use variables in Whippy workflows?

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Use variables to pass data from a workflow trigger or earlier step into later steps. Variables let each step reuse the exact fields returned by previous workflow activity.

Before you start

  • Test the trigger or source step first so sample output is available.

  • Know which destination field needs data.

  • Use Formatter when a value needs cleaning or conversion before another step can use it.

Steps

  1. Test the trigger or source step that contains the data you need.

  2. Open the destination step.

  3. Click into the field that should use previous data.

  4. Open the variable picker.

  5. Select the earlier trigger or step.

  6. Choose the exact field you want to insert.

  7. Test the destination step.

  8. Confirm the resolved value is correct.

  9. Save the step.

Tips

  • Prefer the variable picker over manually typing field paths.

  • Test source steps again after changing their configuration.

  • Use Formatter to normalize dates, phone numbers, email addresses, text, JSON, or XML before mapping.

  • Do not map an entire payload when the destination only needs a few fields.

Troubleshooting

  • If variables are missing, test the source step and reopen the destination field.

  • If a variable resolves blank, inspect the source output and select a more specific field.

  • If the destination rejects the value, use Formatter or another transformation step first.

  • If copied steps use the wrong data, review and reselect variables in each copied step.
