How do I manage channel permissions and users?
Last updated: November 5, 2026
Channel permissions control which teammates can access, reply from, and manage a channel. You can add existing users, invite new users, promote channel admins, remove users from a channel, or disable users entirely.
Before you start
Make sure you have permission to manage channel users.
Confirm which channel the user should access.
Decide whether the person is an existing workspace user or needs an invitation.
Add an existing user to a channel
Go to Organization Settings.
Open Channels.
Find the channel you want to manage.
Click the three-dot actions menu.
Select Edit channel.
Open the Users tab.
Click Add user.
Search for or select the user.
Click Add.
Invite a new user and assign channel access
From the channel’s Users tab, click Invite user.
Enter the user’s email address.
Select the channels the user should access.
Click Invite user.
The user receives an email invitation and gains access after accepting it.
Manage an existing channel user
In the Users tab, find the user.
Click the three-dot actions menu next to their name.
Select the relevant action, such as Permissions, Make Admin, Remove from channel, or Disable user.
Save or confirm the change.
Tips
Give users access only to the channels they need.
Keep at least two admins on important channels.
Review channel access when team roles change.
Assign all relevant channels when inviting a new user to avoid extra follow-up.
Troubleshooting
A user cannot see a channel: Add them from the channel Users tab or invite them if they are not in the workspace.
You cannot downgrade an admin from the channel screen: Update the user’s role from Organization Settings → Users & Permissions.
A user cannot update channel configuration: Confirm they have admin access or the correct organization permissions.
An invited user does not appear in the channel: Ask them to accept the email invitation.
