How do I add automations to a sequence?

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Sequence automations let you react to contact behavior inside a sequence, such as replies, keyword responses, or link clicks. Use automations to send follow-ups, update records, route conversations, or move contacts through the sequence.

Before you start

  • Create or open the sequence you want to automate.

  • Decide which contact behavior should trigger the automation.

  • Prepare the actions you want Whippy to run when the trigger fires.

Steps

  1. Go to Sequences.

  2. Select the sequence you want to automate.

  3. Open the Steps tab.

  4. Select the step where the automation should run.

  5. Click Add Trigger.

  6. Select the trigger type, such as keyword reply, response to message, or link click.

  7. Choose the action that should run when the trigger fires.

  8. Configure the action details, such as message content, tags, assignment, status, or sequence movement.

  9. Save the trigger.

  10. Optionally click Add Action to add more actions to the same trigger.

  11. Repeat for any additional triggers or steps.

  12. Test the sequence before enabling it for live contacts.

Tips

  • Use response and link-click triggers to tailor follow-ups based on engagement.

  • Chain actions only when they should always run together.

  • Use remove-from-sequence actions when a contact completes the intended workflow.

  • Keep automation logic simple to avoid conflicting actions.

Troubleshooting

  • The trigger does not fire: Confirm the trigger type matches the contact behavior.

  • The action does nothing: Edit the action and complete all required fields.

  • Duplicate actions run: Review overlapping triggers and remove redundant ones.

  • The contact stays in the wrong step: Add an explicit move-step or remove-from-sequence action.
