How do I instruct an AI agent to use tools?

Last updated: November 5, 2026

To make an AI agent use a tool reliably, add the tool to the agent and write clear instructions that explain exactly when and how the agent should use it.

Before you start

  • Create and configure the tool before updating the agent instructions.

  • Use the exact tool name in your instructions.

  • Decide the trigger conditions and any limits before enabling the tool for the agent.

Steps

  1. Open Agents.

  2. Select the agent you want to update.

  3. Click Edit agent.

  4. Find the Select tools field and add the tool the agent should be able to use.

  5. Go to the Agent instructions section.

  6. Add a dedicated tool-calling section.

  7. Name the tool exactly as it appears in Whippy.

  8. Describe the conditions that must be true before the agent uses the tool.

  9. Define any rules, such as required information, one-time use limits, or when to avoid the tool.

  10. Save the agent configuration.

Example instruction pattern

  • Tool: Tool name.

  • Use when: The exact customer intent or condition is present.

  • Required inputs: The information the agent must collect first.

  • Rules: Limits that prevent early, repeated, or unsafe tool use.

Tips

  • Use bullet points for trigger conditions so the instructions are easy to scan.

  • Be specific about what information the agent must collect before calling the tool.

  • Add repeat-use rules if the tool should only run once per conversation.

Troubleshooting

  • The agent never uses the tool: Confirm the tool is selected for the agent and named in the instructions.

  • The agent uses the tool too early: Add clearer prerequisite conditions.

  • The agent calls the tool repeatedly: Add a rule limiting repeat calls unless the customer changes relevant information.
