What are agent tools in Whippy?

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Agent tools are action capabilities that let Whippy AI agents perform structured tasks during conversations or calls, such as transferring calls, sending messages, updating records, or triggering external systems.

Before you start

  • Decide what action the agent needs to take.

  • Confirm the tool type that matches the action.

  • Prepare clear agent instructions that explain when and how the tool should be used.

Steps

  1. Open Agents from the left navigation.

  2. Select Tools to view available tools.

  3. Select Create Tool.

  4. Choose a tool type.

  5. Enter a tool name and optional description.

  6. Save the tool to open its configuration page.

  7. Configure the tool settings, such as timeout, speech behavior, action targets, or API details.

  8. If using an Execute Actions tool, add one or more actions.

  9. Save the tool configuration.

  10. Open the agent that should use the tool.

  11. Enable the tool for that agent.

  12. Update the agent instructions to define when and how the tool should be used.

  13. Save and publish the agent.

Tips

  • Treat tools as action capabilities, not behavior logic.

  • Write explicit trigger conditions in the agent instructions.

  • Use clear, descriptive tool labels.

  • Limit tools per agent to only what is necessary.

  • Test tools in a controlled environment before production use.

  • Review transcripts to confirm correct tool usage.

Troubleshooting

  • If a tool does not appear in agent settings, save the tool and refresh the agent editor.

  • If the agent does not use the tool, make sure it is assigned and referenced in instructions.

  • If the tool triggers unexpectedly, refine the trigger conditions.

  • If a call transfer fails, verify the target, identifier, and channel.

  • If an API-based tool times out, increase the timeout in tool settings.

  • If there is silence during execution, enable speak during or after execution where appropriate.
